Insperity Builds 72 Sales Training Modules in Three Months with Articulate Storyline
As a leading provider of human resources and business solutions, Insperity invests heavily in sales training-an investment that created constant tension between time spent on training and time spent in front of prospective clients. So when Insperity's sales training team saw the opportunity to optimize on both fronts with mobile training, they jumped on it.
Trouble was, in order to make this work, the team had to convert their existing Flash course library into HTML5 format so it would function on mobile devices. At the same time, they had to preserve tracking capabilities in Insperity's existing learning management system (LMS) so they could continue to monitor learners' performance. Tony Isaac, Instructional Design (ID) Supervisor, recalls having few software options back in early 2012 that were simple to use and would publish to HTML5 effectively. "And then we heard about Articulate Storyline. We quickly realized it was perfect for us," says Tony.
With the help of Articulate's E-Learning Heroes community, the team plowed through Insperity's training library and even created entirely new training content. And just three months later, Tony's team handed over a full library of 72 mobile courses that they had converted or created from scratch in Storyline. "We couldn't have done that so quickly without using Storyline," Tony explains. “Because we are able to provide a more flexible way for our Business Performance Advisors to learn, they can now spend more time in front of prospective clients since they're no longer strapped to a PC in the office," notes Tony. "And more time in front of prospects means more revenue-generating opportunities for Insperity."
How LexisNexis Used Mobile Learning to Improve Sales Training
Thousands of attorneys across the U.S. rely on LexisNexis’ over 30 terabytes of statutes, laws, and opinions to build cases. And with over 100 separate areas of legal practice in existence, the LexisNexis sales staff desperately needed a quick and easy way to prep for sales situations.
That's why LexisNexis enlisted Lead Design & Technology Consultant Chris Bahns to give its sales department a first-year law school understanding of one of the more nuanced legal disciplines: Intellectual Property (IP) law. Using Storyline, Chris’ team created a training module that was so effective they were asked to do the same for a whopping 13 other areas of practice, resulting in the Practice Area Training Series.
The Training Series owes its success to the fact that the content it covers is relevant, easily consumable, and entertaining. Learners can choose relevant practice areas rather than absorbing everything at once in a linear course. Content is easily consumable because the Series focuses on key concepts that can be used as talking points in sales situations. And learners stay entertained with video introductions with layered graphics and animation that humanize the subject matter.
One sales rep raved, "I want to tell you how much I enjoy your training." Others have praised the series for having a "nice flow" and being "entertaining." It was even complimented for having "some of the best explanation of practice area content that I've ever seen." The source of that compliment? An actual attorney.
LexisNexis has continued to take advantage of the benefits of online training. Because staff can take the training series on both mobile devices and desktop computers, the company saves significant costs on travel and accommodations associated with traditional training methods. What’s more, Articulate Storyline has made it easy for a team of designers with varying experience levels to expand the series.
And with the added support of Articulate's E-Learning Heroes community, the #1 community for course creators, LexisNexis feels confident using Articulate as its e-learning solutions provider.
"Articulate's online community is like no other we've seen," said Chris. "With the community and Storyline, we have everything we need to develop courses that make a real impact on our business."
Rentokil Delivers 50,000 Learning Sessions in 32 Languages Every Month
Just how many people did it take to create 107 mobile-ready e-learning interventions in less than three months? "Five," says Richard Gregory, head of learning and development at Rentokil Initial. And that wasn't a particularly unusual quarter for Rentokil Initial, a global company with a diverse product portfolio and operations in 62 countries. Keeping 30,000 employees around the world up to date on everything from compliance and safety procedures to new product information requires a high volume of effective training.
In fact, the company's online university logs about 50,000 learning sessions a month. That's about one-and-a-half sessions per employee every 30 days.
"Until three years ago, we trained employees in classrooms at a massive expense," Richard notes. "Now, we can deliver the online and mobile courses to the right people at the point of need anywhere around the globe on a huge scale. And we do it with just one project manager and four developers. We're now able to deliver five times the amount of content since starting to transition to all-digital training."
Powering the company's impressive course creation machine: Articulate Storyline. "I didn't have an e-learning background before using Storyline," notes Macaulay Trenchard, a learning and development team member. "I picked it up really easily."
Now, every day, Richard's team creates interactive modules that combine videos, games, and other interactive activities. Thanks to Storyline's translation features, the team has easily translated the courses into the relevant languages. And with 32 different languages spoken across the business, being able to translate content effectively is critical.
The icing on the cake? Richard's team has recently been tapped to create a digital training program for Rentokil's customers. The program allows customers to upskill their employees with specific training modules around pest control, health, and safety, and that means time and money saved on preventable infestations, contaminations, and infections.
"Not only has Storyline helped us cut massive training costs,” noted Richard, "It's also helping us retain customers and generate revenue streams."
Changefirst Slashes Training Costs for Client with Articulate Storyline Courses
Over the years, clients of the U.K.based change consultancy Changefirst had wrestled with the time and expense of sponsoring face-to-face training. No one doubted its effectiveness but the costs could be staggering. Even a two-day offsite training program could quickly cost more than £100,000. But Changefirst tackled the problem with a highly cost-effective e-learning training program. It helped one client reduce per-person training costs by 96% while reaching four times the people.
Using Articulate Storyline, e-learning developer Phil Mayor helped Changefirst create an e-learning course that learners can access from anywhere in the world on their iPads and computers. The course's highly interactive content changes based on a learner's input, helping them understand how organizational change impacts their own work environment. Through short-answer exercises, learners make a plan for addressing those scenarios. By the end of the course, they have a downloadable change management guide they can use to manage an upcoming change.
With these e-learning modules, Changefirst can now offer clients a way to deliver its proven training methodology to a larger audience at a fraction of the cost. Changefirst Operations Manager Nathan Brewer explains, "Now we can help more organizations implement lasting change successfully, at a more affordable cost. And that's a win-win."
The Global Fund Saves Lives with E-Learning
Not many e-learning developers can say their work is a matter of life and death. But for Julia Burgi, communications officer with The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, it's just that.
The Global Fund manages nearly $4 billion in funds annually, allocated across 140 countries to fight these preventable diseases. To make sure these funds make the biggest impact possible, Julia creates e-learning courses to help a range of stakeholders, including applicants, donors and program implementers, master the funding application process.
"Historically, we have provided in-person training in regional and local meetings with PowerPoint and Word documents," explained Julia. "We needed a more simplified, more time-efficient application training process so that organizations can more quickly access the funds they need to fight the three diseases."
So just how did Julia and her team enhance the in-person training programs with something that could be localized for more than a hundred countries and accessed from anywhere? Articulate Storyline.
"Storyline made it easy to translate our trainings and make it relevant to each country," said Julia. "We even turned the notes tab into a narration tab so learners can follow along, regardless of their native language."
Since the new application training was launched, the trainings have been accessed more than 5,000 times, and The Global Fund reports a significant increase in the quality of applications they've been receiving.
Julia notes, "Higher quality applications means funds will get to those who need them most more quickly."
For Julia and her team, e-learning isn't just a time saver it also helps save lives.
Coaching Association of Canada Uses E-Learning to Stem Sports Concussions
Hundreds of thousands of athletes suffer concussions every year. And as evidence mounts linking concussions with long-term brain damage, safety in youth and recreational sports is a growing concern.
The Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) decided to do something about that concern, supported by funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada. And despite having never created e-learning before, the CAC built a mammoth five-sport, dual-language concussion safety and prevention series in Articulate Storyline in less than six months.
"Storyline was the only e-learning software that could implement our instructional design in the budget and time window we had," recalls CAC program coordinator Anthony Bhagwandin. After discussions with partners Hockey Canada, Parachute, and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, the CAC team selected which topics to tackle in their e-learning program for coaches.
As the cornerstone piece of the series, "Making Head Way in Sport" teaches coaches about concussion safety and prevention through video testimonials, animations, and interactive exercises. Then, assessments test how well coaches can apply the material: they must earn a passing score on real-life scenarios before they can advance, facilitated by branching and variable-driven scoring.
The CAC was amazed they created the series in just a few short months and feedback from coaches has been overwhelmingly positive. Cyndie Flett, Vice President of Research and Development at CAC and project manager, is thrilled with the impact of this Storyline series. "Coaches play a key role in injury prevention for children and youth. With this e-learning series, we're able to put the latest and greatest information on brain injuries and prevention at coaches' fingertips."
Unicorn Training Creates Mobile-Optimized Training for Global Learners
Remember when learners sat down at computers for online training programs? Not so anymore. Increasingly, learners want to access courses from mobile devices and that poses a problem, because all that beautiful Flash-based training content in your library isn't going to work perfectly on mobile devices.
Enter Unicorn Training, one of the premier providers of e-learning solutions, specializing in the financial services sector. Earlier this year, Unicorn landed a massive refresh project on 100+ modules of content they originally created for the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) in 2006. CIPS needed it all to be mobile-compatible while preserving its interactivity and delivered within eight months.
At the same time, Unicorn committed to working on a charity global learning initiative through LINGOS and Last Mile Learning. Lead designer Samantha (Sam) Yates volunteered to create the 90-minute e-learning training course for foreign aid workers in remote areas with sporadic connectivity. Once again, mobile was a must.
For both projects, Unicorn turned to Storyline. "Features like slide layers, triggers, states, and variables let us develop rich, engaging content quickly and easily," says Sam. "Because we didn't need a programmer, we could immediately see our progress and make edits on the fly, which helped us build courses faster."
Publishing, too, was a snap in Storyline. Whether learners were commuters or foreign aid workers, they could access Unicorn's courses with full functionality from anywhere they had a connection and even save it for offline viewing using the Articulate Mobile Player app for iPad.
"We couldn't have created these courses with the time and resources we had without Storyline," admits Sam. "Now we're spending less time building courses and more time thinking about how to best present information across any device."
SWBC Keeps Scammers Locked Out with Articulate Storyline Security Training Course
As members of a diversified financial services company, SWBC employees are privy to massive amounts of sensitive data. This includes more than just names and addresses, accounts, social security numbers, financial data, and other information that could destroy someone's credit if it fell into the wrong hands. And corporate penalties for a data breach could easily reach upward of a million dollars.
To mitigate risk and keep customers safe, SWBC has tight security policies in place for employees to follow. But what good are these policies if the training on them is rote and boring? "To keep SWBC compliant, our employees need to be aware of the policies and learn how to apply them in everyday work," says Ira Hall, Technical Training Development Specialist at SWBC. "For that, we need to get people engaged and interested in security training."
Hall's opportunity to overhaul the company's existing security training serendipitously coincided with the Articulate Storyline release, giving Hall the design tools and functionality he needed to create a truly engaging e-learning course for SWBC's geographically dispersed workforce.
Using interactive exercises, learner-driven
Even with no Storyline experience, Hall estimates that he built the course three to four times faster than he could have using any other software program. And not only did he design faster, but also he helped participants really digest what they learned. The results say it all: after Hall's course, 94% of participants passed a post-course phishing test. The previous security training yielded only a 65% pass rate. Hall beams, "An EVP at SWBC said this is the best security training course we've ever had."
How Performance Impact Is Developing 30 Online Courses in Record Time
Imagine that you're a small, nimble e-learning development shop and your client wants 30 interactive online courses-14 of them ASAP. Huge opportunity, right? It's also a monumental challenge. How do you ramp your development time by a factor of 2 or 3? Performance Impact rose to that very challenge last year when one of its clients, the Center for Leadership Services (CLS), asked for a whopping 30 e-certification courses and needed half of them in short order.
Performance Impact's design team members knew they'd have to work smart, and they quickly determined that Articulate Storyline was the right tool for the job. Trouble was, they'd never used it before. Enter E-Learning Heroes. The team members learned Articulate Storyline even as they worked furiously to meet their development deadlines, relying heavily on E-Learning Heroes for tutorials, how-to videos, and advice from fellow community members.
By developing common elements for all the courses including slide templates and character sets and using slide layers, triggers, states, and variables to create interactions, Performance Impact's design team members were able to complete eight highly interactive online courses in the first six months and that's starting from ground zero in Storyline. Since then, they've rolled out six more e-certification courses and will tackle the remaining 16 online courses when the corresponding in-person workshops are finished.
"Storyline's powerful tools made it easy to create visually robust content in less time," says Lisa Van Damme, an instructional designer at Performance Impact. "Storyline saves us time and helps us wow clients." Sam Shriver, the managing director of sales and marketing at CLS, concurs: "I could not be happier with the end product. Very, very well done!"
