Training to deepen knowledge and love of rugby
Welcome to the fascinating world of high-performance rugby sports training. In this very first episode of our exclusive webinar series, Learning Luminaries, we chat with Colin Moran, National Training and Education Manager of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).
The IRFU is the national governing body for rugby in Ireland and serves hundreds of clubs and teams across the country’s four provinces. It supports a wide learning audience including coaches, volunteers, medics, referees, recreational players, and elite athletes. Topics span from technical, health and safety, and regulatory knowledge to increasing participation in, and love of the sport.
So, how does the IRFU hit its skill-building goals and cater to varied audiences across Ireland? Check out a few highlights below, and then watch the full webinar here.
“I’m always trying to put myself in the shoes of the learner. We need to ensure that every interaction with us is worthwhile and useful to them.”

The challenge: Make training more useful, engaging, and efficient
As an organization founded in 1879, the IRFU had no shortage of training content. However, content was mostly paper- or PowerPoint-based, making it difficult to distribute updates quickly to reach volunteers, players, and coaches across the country. It was challenging to decipher what was actually necessary and useful to learners due to the sheer volume of content. Subject matter experts from the four Irish provinces also worked in siloes and often duplicated content efforts, further complicating matters.
The IRFU shares their winning training strategies
Using Rise 360 and Storyline 360, the IRFU set out to tackle these challenges and make training more useful, engaging, and efficient. In the webinar, Colin Moran shares the organization’s game-changing strategies that led to a 95% learner satisfaction rate.
Tips include:
- How to create and adapt training for a diverse range of learner backgrounds, skill levels, preferences, and needs
- Strategies for overcoming organizational silos, getting collaborator buy-in, and gathering information from multiple SMEs to advance unified learning goals
- The complementary role e-learning plays in optimizing face-to-face training for physical skills that require in-person practice
