What is localization?

Localization is the process of adapting content so that it is as accurate and relevant as possible for global users. It includes not only text translation of a target language, but also modification of multimedia elements, case studies, examples, scenarios, and other content elements to ensure they resonate with different cultures and linguistic backgrounds.

Sometimes, language localization may be necessary without translation. For example, if two different audiences are located in different countries but speak the same language, they may use different currencies, measurements, phrases, and formatting parameters. In this case, the localization process would still help facilitate better understanding among the target market, even though no translation process would be necessary.

Example: Our website localization efforts allow users around the world to get the most value out of our marketing materials, regardless of their local culture.

What are the benefits of localization?

Localizing content makes it even more culturally relevant and resonant for a target audience than text translation alone. An effective localization strategy can increase readers’ comprehension of the material and help preserve key aspects of the content, like humor or cultural references. For localized e-learning content, this typically means better knowledge retention, improved test scores, and a deeper understanding of the learning material since it is offered in the learner’s preferred or native language.
