What is remote learning?

Remote learning, sometimes referred to as distance learning, is learning that happens from a physical distance. In some cases, instructors and learners may participate in the learning from different time zones. Remote instruction is made possible through digital tools, particularly the internet.

Example: We tailored our remote learning program for different age groups. For example, young learners selected different images on a screen to show how they felt, while older participants wrote short paragraphs.

What are the benefits of remote learning environments?

When remote learning environments are asynchronous, learners may work at their own pace to complete lessons and review materials. This added flexibility can allow greater job flexibility for remote teaching roles. Remote learning also can be personalized to suit different job functions, age groups, or learning styles, allowing for better retention of information.

Because remote teaching does not require a physical space for all learners to gather, it can also reduce the costs associated with in-person learning.

Creating a successful remote learning environment

To create a successful virtual environment for learning, it’s key to retain a level of interactivity that keeps learners engaged. Make spaces for interaction between students online with chat functions or virtual forums that allow them to respond to and learn from each other.

Invest in the right remote educational resources and online tools—for example, course authoring and distribution software—to ensure your learning environment is running smoothly.
