What is a subject matter expert?

A subject matter expert (SME) is a person with highly specialized knowledge of a particular subject. This expertise can be gained through formal education or hands-on experience in particular jobs or specific industries. Because of their deep understanding of a particular topic, subject matter experts often serve as the go-to authority on that subject, as they are able to provide valuable feedback and insights to other teams.

Example: Whenever we produce how-to guides for our audience, our marketing team makes sure to leverage SME knowledge to inform the copy and key takeaways.

Subject matter expert responsibilities 

Being a subject matter expert means providing deep knowledge of a specific topic or particular job. Typically, these individuals serve as the go-to person or reviewer when teams are producing a key resource or building out an important business strategy. 

For example, project managers tasked with facilitating the production of a new resource may identify key subject matter experts to weigh in on specific questions, helping ensure the content of the piece is accurate and properly framed.
