What is xAPI?
xAPI, or The Experience API, is an e-learning software specification that allows for the collection, storage, and retrieval of learner data. Originally developed by Rustici Software, it was given a code name of “Project Tin Can,” which led to its original name of Tin Cap API. Today, it is managed by the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative. The xAPI relies on the idea that learning can happen anywhere, not just in traditional e-learning courses hosted on a learning management system—therefore, learning can also be tracked outside of an LMS.
Example: Our LMS creates a browser extension with xAPI that allows learners to see what content they’ve consumed across various sites.
How does xAPI work?
xAPI tracks key information about learning experiences that happen both on and offline and across different platforms via xAPI statements. These statements, which explain the learner’s actions, are stored in a learning record store (LRS). The information recorded through xAPI can help learning systems create more personalized learning paths.
