What is the zone of proximal development?

In educational psychology, the zone of proximal development (ZPD) is the space between what a learner can accomplish with support and without support. It refers to the tasks a person can only accomplish with the help of an expert, but not yet independently.

Example: The ability to sound out words was in his zone of proximal development. He could do it with the guidance of his teacher, but not yet on his own
