The Challenge

Agilent needed to support employees through engaging, cohesive e-learning to create valuable customer partnerships

Agilent’s sales force goes beyond simply understanding their products and services. Team members serve as true customer partners—employing their in-depth product expertise to help customers meet their unique business goals.

Agilent’s customer-facing teams require deep knowledge of a range of scientific specialties. To help these teams succeed, the company has always created virtual and self-directed learning programs tailored to agents across the organization, including sales, field service, and application engineering.

When the pandemic hit, Agilent’s e-learning focus shifted in a few key ways. Alongside needing efficient tools to promote flexible learning—whether in the office or on the field—the company wanted more attention-grabbing content. Agilent sought a solution that would increase engagement opportunities for their learners, leading to more effective and memorable learning experiences. They also required this solution to be user-friendly and efficient for the company’s diverse course creators spread across the organization.

Despite being subject matter experts, Agilent’s course creators aren’t always formally trained in learning and development (L&D), and course creation doesn’t make up the full scope of their role. Therefore, it was crucial to select tools that would enable them to create training content easily and efficiently, regardless of their expertise.

The Answer

With Articulate 360, Agilent empowers course owners to create a diverse array of training content at scale

Agilent’s Global Program Manager, Jennifer Bucci, and her team began using Articulate a few years ago. At that time, different teams used various e-learning solutions to create their training. The result was a disjointed learning experience across the organization.

Bucci and her team shared Articulate 360—particularly Rise 360—with the organization’s 300+ learning council members, demonstrating how efficiently they could work within the product to create engaging content. Part of this is because, as Bucci explains, “Rise does a lot of the interaction for you. It’s a game-changer for people who may not have a huge learning and development background.”

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, leading the group to advocate for standardizing their e-learning solution to Articulate 360 across the organization. Agilent recognized that this decision would benefit the company from a cost perspective, enable consistent and cohesive training across teams, and make knowledge-sharing easier.

Today, Agilent uses Articulate products—including Storyline 360, Rise 360, and Review 360—to create and collaborate on various training for customer-facing teams. For example, field service and application engineers learn to service and troubleshoot instruments, and sales force teams get trained in selling skills and the company’s vast product portfolio.

“We use Articulate to create so many different types of training around sales enablement, building training that teaches selling skills and helps our aftermarket salespeople understand the portfolio,” says Bucci. “The way Rise 360 presents information also makes it easy for salespeople to go back and do a quick refresher without digging through the content.”

Organization-wide, Agilent also offers compliance training for all employees. And individual teams use Articulate 360 to build employee upskilling courses in areas such as Gen AI.

Agilent employees aren’t the only ones who have benefited from training developed in Articulate. Agilent University helps customers train their teams efficiently. The training improves customer productivity and confidence using the company’s instruments and systems.

While Agilent offers classroom, virtual, and online training, more than 44% of customers who register for training take advantage of Agilent’s online training options, which include more than 600 hours and 570 courses. Customers consistently rate their experience as “very good” or “excellent” and say that they would recommend Agilent University to others.

Unlocking Human Potential

Articulate 360 unlocks greater interactivity for Agilent’s 18,000+ learners while reducing development time and effort

Since transitioning to Articulate, both Agilent course creators and learners have expressed appreciation for the ease of creating engaging and interactive content—no matter their level of experience in L&D. “The way Rise 360 makes it quick and easy to add engagement opportunities to courses is a real game-changer—especially for people who don’t have an instructional design background,” says Bucci.

Agilent’s course creators have also appreciated the quality of Articulate’s support resources. “I’ve never worked with a platform that has the quality of resources available that Articulate has,” says Bucci. “Articulate’s training and support resources make it very easy to get started. You don’t just get inspiration for what you can create—you’re also shown how it’s actually done.”

Learners at Agilent have valued their experiences with Articulate courses. For this reason, the organization has started migrating existing training content from other tools to Rise 360. “Even though the content remained roughly the same, learners appreciated the change,” says Bucci. “With Rise 360, the information was presented in a much more engaging way.”

Rise 360 and Storyline 360 unlock greater ease and efficiency for Agilent Technology’s course creators, as well as increased engagement for 18,000+ learners. Their teams are valuable partners to those they serve, helping organizations ensure safety and advance their business objectives.

At any company, not everybody who develops learning is an instructional designer. Articulate doesn’t just give inspiration to show what you can create—they show you how it’s actually done.
