The Challenge

BJC HealthCare needed an agile, efficient e-learning solution to train tens of thousands of learners

At BJC HealthCare, comprehensive training is crucial for ensuring high-quality patient care across nearly two dozen hospitals. With tens of thousands of employees to educate, the organization must deliver effective, scalable learning experiences. These cover rigorous compliance, safety, and specialized medical procedures training as well as onboarding and continuous education.

The BJC Institute for Learning and Development (BILD), a department of BJC HealthCare’s HR service line, has long recognized the importance of online training to provide flexibility for busy healthcare professionals. However, their e-learning approach met a roadblock when Flash, their primary content creation tool, was discontinued. With no immediate alternative, the team reverted to basic slide deck presentations and PDFs. “Our level of sophistication with courses really dropped during that time,” says Senior Learning and Development Consultant Jen Patton. 

BJC HealthCare needed a robust solution to develop and manage a large volume of organization-wide compliance training while empowering various subject matter experts to create service-line and hospital-specific content. The ideal platform would allow for quick onboarding of course creators, support mobile-responsive design for on-the-go learning, and offer interactive features to enhance engagement and retention.

The Answer

BJC HealthCare’s learning and development team was introduced to Articulate through Rise—impressed by its interactive features, user-friendly interface, and mobile-responsive design. They started building courses with just a few licenses but quickly found that the tool was their answer, enabling them to pivot their focus toward empowering more course creators across the organization.

“Rise allowed us to shift our focus to supporting others throughout the healthcare system in developing their own online content,” says Patton, noting that today, the organization holds over 30 licenses to accommodate all their course creators. 

How do all these teams collaborate? Review streamlines the process. “We rely heavily on Review,” says Patton. “Articulate 360 allows our subject matter experts to focus on reviewing content at their convenience, without worrying about sending edits through email or setting up review meetings, saving time and reducing complexity.”

BJC HealthCare has further leveraged Articulate 360’s accessibility features. “100% of our all-employee courses are now ​​accessible because of Rise’s built-in support of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines,” says Patton. Beyond this, the team has further improved inclusivity by adding optional audio features to company-wide courses.

Since switching to Articulate 360, BJC HealthCare has developed several impactful training programs, such as the BJC Leader Onboarding Program, which combines instructor-led and virtual courses with scenario-based lessons created using Rise and embedded Storyline blocks. As the organization expands its unified health system with Saint Luke’s, new department members are today developing an updated iteration of this program, which will include all West Region Leaders starting in 2025.

The team also collaborates with the compliance department on all-employee training, and Rise’s Web publishing feature supports BJC Earn While You Learn, an external program that simultaneously trains potential employees while hiring them.

All in, the organization equips over 35,000 learners, including hospital staff, volunteers, physicians, and contractors with the training they need to provide specialized care. “We love that you can create a course once and use it many different ways for greater efficiency,” says Patton.

Since starting with Articulate, the BJC Institute for Learning and Development has received positive responses from course creators and learners alike. The learning and development team can now efficiently train their subject matter experts across the organization to create engaging courses. “Every time I demo Rise for somebody, their immediate reaction is, ‘Oh, that looks so easy and fun!’ And they’re right. Rise is fun!” says Patton.

Learners, too, have improved their understanding of complex topics with Articulate courses. For example, last year, the team collaborated with the legal department to create a new course on the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it relates to BJC’s policies. “We’re still getting compliments on that course,” says Patton. “And it helped with learners’ retention, which is so important.” 

The team has found that Rise courses are well-suited for their learners’ needs, offering ultimate flexibility across devices. Patton explains, “Rise works on any device. Our people are always on the go in healthcare, so having that flexibility when taking mandatory compliance training is super helpful because no matter what size screen you’ve got, the courses still look great.”
