The Challenge

Epstein Gibbons Communications needed a versatile e-learning tool to create complex, performance-based training

Dan Epstein has created courses for thousands of learners across industries spanning tech, medical, biotech and pharma, construction, engineering, defense, finance, automotive, education, hospitality, manufacturing, and transportation. The training covers topics ranging from compliance, sales effectiveness, and security to product and technical training, customer service, and more.

Initially, Epstein developed content with another popular e-learning tool. However, as the sole Learning and Development Consultant and Producer at Epstein Gibbons Communications, Inc., he found the tool too clunky, time-consuming, and difficult to work with. To create the complex training his clients required, Epstein needed a solution that would allow him to develop custom, engaging interactions to captivate learners. To further customize learner experiences, he also needed to build interactions that could serve up different experiences based on real-time learner decisions.

The Answer

Epstein Gibbons Communications leverages Storyline to create immersive experiences with ease

Epstein switched to Storyline in 2014, noting, “The kind of things clients want are simply too complex for other tools. I need that Storyline engine underneath to get stuff done.” Storyline’s usability and intuitive interface also make content creation easy. “What motivates me to continue using Storyline is my familiarity with the product and its general ease of use. I taught myself how to use Storyline. I couldn’t do that with other tools,” says Epstein. Plus, when courses are completed, Review also streamlines Epstein’s collaborative process, explaining: “Review makes collecting, tracking, and managing feedback simple.”

Epstein leverages Storyline’s variables, states, and triggers to create simulations and hands-on experiences that account for user input. For example, for a European conveyor belt manufacturer, Epstein built interactive e-learning scenarios to help customers understand how to maintain systems and complete product repairs. “I integrated the client’s 3D-rendered videos to make it look like the conveyor belt was moving. Learners had to investigate areas, diagnose problems, and select tools to make repairs,” Epstein says.

For another Chicago-based client, Epstein built scenarios for a medical assistant credential course. In the course, learners gain experience helping patients suffering from different conditions. “There isn’t always one right answer. So I used Storyline to implement a ‘best,’ ‘OK,’ and ‘poor’ grading scale and allowed learners to practice real-world decision-making in a safe environment,” says Epstein.

Beyond simulations and scenarios, Epstein also uses Storyline’s interactive features to get learners involved. For example, by incorporating buttons and dials into traditionally dry compliance courses, Epstein creates dynamic, user-controlled experiences. This strategic use of interactivity keeps learners alert and invested, even when they aren’t working through practice scenarios and knowledge checks.

Unlocking Human Potential

Epstein Gibbons Communications delivers measurable impact for thousands of learners with Storyline

Epstein’s work demonstrates how well-crafted e-learning propels actionable change. In one prominent example, Epstein created active listening scenario exercises for customer care representatives at a major pharmaceutical firm. “The training led to a 50 percent reduction in the number of cases requiring special handling,” says Epstein.

Epstein has forged valuable connections with a vibrant Storyline user community—sharing how this helps him elevate his craft: “Helping others solve problems has benefited my skills, and I’ve also learned a lot from other creators.” Even better, Epstein’s learners feel that same sense of professional empowerment: “I’ve received lots of compliments from project stakeholders and agency reps about my work’s beneficial impact,” says Epstein.

Epstein’s commitment to performance-based training and engaging content makes a tangible difference, helping front-line workers thrive and feel empowered in an ever-evolving business landscape. “Storyline allows learners to practice performance-based activities,” says Epstein. “And that’s ultimately why we’re here—we make training to teach people how to do things.”

Epstein Gibbons Communications leverages Storyline to shape more effective, engaging professional training across industries.

Storyline is a powerful tool. I can make courses ‘sing’ by adding videos, graphics, branching interactions, and real-life task complexity for technical and human behavior training.
