The Challenge

GP Strategies needed creative freedom while converting from Flash to HTML5-based learning

GP Strategies serves thousands of enterprises worldwide, and more than 800 specialists make up the Learning Experience division. The specialists typically create standard compliance and safety training for enterprise customers as well as hyper-individualized content aimed at elevating human performance. The team takes a comprehensive approach and designs, develops, and delivers virtual and classroom training, videos, podcasts, and e-learning solutions.

The learning experience division initially developed all e-learning content with Adobe Flash. As Flash became obsolete, GP Strategies needed to switch gears and build new modules while converting existing content into an HTML5-based tool.

The team wanted something robust, easy to use, and developer-friendly. “Normally, you will feel that there’s a boundary you need to work within, but we wanted to give space for our developers to play,” explains Subburaj Navaneetharajan, Global Head of Creative Media and Development at GP Strategies. Moreover, the learning experience division had to secure sensitive content, translate their work into multiple languages, and bridge collaborative skill gaps between instructional designers and writers.

GP Strategies explored various HTML5-based tools when transitioning away from Flash—and ultimately chose Storyline 360 as one of its primary solutions for creating content rapidly and securely. “In a year’s time, we converted thousands of hours of learning from Flash to HTML5 with Storyline,” explains Navaneetharajan. “It helped us move seamlessly from one side to the other.”

The team streamlines and increases production with the built-in Content Library 360, easy export and import translation process, templates, and user-friendly interface. Instructional designers and content writers can work directly within Storyline, and it’s easy to train new developers in a single workday. “What I love about Articulate is that it is easy to create from any layman’s perspective. If you want to develop a course, it’s not rocket science,” Navaneetharajan says.  

Enriching the learning experience with unique, compelling content is crucial for GP Strategies. The team creates interactive training with videos, audio clips, text, panoramic graphics, and more. “You can always explore how to do things within Storyline. It provides that flexibility for our developers,” says Navaneetharajan, “It’s easy to build any type of interactivity—from simple to complex.” 

The team at GP Strategies has created around 150 game-based learning experiences, many of which have won awards. For one long-time customer in the aviation industry, GP Strategies built a complex technical training program that included a simulated cockpit. There, the pressure is on—as pilots must take off and land the plane safely, all from the safety of a simulation. 

For another customer in the nuclear power industry, the team created several technically detailed programs with simulations, 2D and 3D videos, and eye-catching graphics and animations. They’ve even built virtual walkthroughs for one customer where learners must explore different areas and familiarize themselves with a space. “We thought we wouldn’t be able to do it,” Navaneetharajan clarifies, “but we were able to figure it out easily using the Storyline JavaScript triggers.”
