Established in 1975, Intermountain Health is the largest nonprofit health system in the U.S. Mountain West. It operates in seven states with 34 hospitals, over 400 clinics, and an extensive telehealth network. The organization serves millions annually—integrating wellness programs, chronic disease management, and primary, specialty, and emergency care services.
Intermountain Health’s integrated system extends beyond its facilities through its Community Connect initiative, which equips smaller healthcare providers with the organization’s advanced electronic health record (EHR) system. Coupled with a focus on empathy, affordability, and continuous education, this ensures high-quality care across all locations—within Intermountain Health’s network and at partner facilities.
The Challenge
Intermountain Health needed a more efficient way to distribute customized training to an extensive learner network
Intermountain Health’s Epic Clinical Education team trains around 70,000 caregivers, both within the organization and at external Community Connect sites. The team creates virtual, instructor-led training and self-paced e-learning modules on clinical documentation. Their work covers new-hire orientation for charting patient care in the EHR system and ongoing education to ensure effective patient documentation and services.
Initially, the team used an alternative learning management system (LMS) to distribute e-learning courses, but the tool proved problematic. Course authors grappled with managing, organizing, and updating files—and the LMS’s complicated, non-intuitive workflow hindered learner registration. “I became the go-to problem solver, getting pinged multiple times a day about users who couldn’t access the training,” explains Jarrod Hogan, the Epic Clinical Education team manager.
These technical difficulties made it difficult to deliver high-quality, engaging training. Intermountain Health needed a solution—one that would efficiently manage their large-scale training needs and ensure seamless access for learners across their vast network.
The Answer
Intermountain Health leverages Reach to improve training access, reduce admin workload, and scale learning
Intermountain Health has long relied on Articulate for course creation—using Rise for quick, polished training and Storyline for complex, interactive simulations. So, when Hogan learned about Reach’s launch in 2023, he immediately recognized its potential.
“I thought, ‘Reach is going to solve our problem with reaching learners outside of our organization,’” Hogan recalls. The cost-effectiveness of Reach further made it an attractive option, leading the team to pilot it with their Community Connect sites and ultimately replace their previous LMS.
The transition was smooth despite initial hesitations. “With anything new, there are reservations,” Hogan explains. “But we understood the challenges with the other platform, so people were open-minded.” Once implemented, the benefits were evident. “It was obvious that Reach was definitely the way to go,” Hogan adds.
For learners, Reach’s self-registration process eliminated previous hurdles. “The way learners can easily register and access content with Reach was a big win,” Hogan notes. “We send a link to program administrators, who distribute it to anyone needing training. Learners set up an email and password, and they’re in. No hoops to jump through, just simple access every time.”
Course creators also benefit from Reach’s intuitive file management and publishing features. “Reach cuts out file management steps you’d normally worry about,” Hogan explains. “When I’m ready to publish from Rise or Storyline, I can just select ‘Publish to Reach.’ It’s seamless.” Republishing is equally straightforward: “If I make changes and republish, Reach keeps all the learner history,” says Hogan. “That’s a super slick feature.”
The analytics capabilities in Reach have further proven valuable for tracking learner progress. “As an admin, I can look at completed courses and active learner usage. That was huge for us, as we wanted to see if people were using the tool and if we were getting what we wanted from it,” Hogan says.
On the impact of switching to Reach, Hogan summarizes, “A lot of the stuff with Articulate just works. And so this just works.”
Unlocking Human Potential
Intermountain Health cuts costs and admin time with Articulate 360, streamlining medical education and enhancing patient care
Today, Intermountain Health has 1,000 active Reach users, with plans to expand as it onboards new Community Connect partners. This user growth is driven by several factors, chief among them being cost savings. As Hogan reports, “We saved nearly $100,000 a year by switching to Reach.” And for Hogan especially, he now has fewer daily disruptions, sharing, “Since switching to Reach, I’ve not been pinged one single time about someone who couldn’t access the learning content.”
Hogan highlights how Reach allows his instructional designers to focus on what they do best. “Reach has made life easier,” says Hogan. “We’re able to tap into a content creator’s full potential because we don’t have to worry about creating workarounds or using a tool that doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to.”
This seamless access is complemented by the Epic Clinical Education team’s ability to monitor learner needs—resulting in better quality courses. Hogan elaborates, “We can look at analytics in Reach to validate if what we’re doing is working and making a difference or if we need to make changes.” Moreover, learners are encouraged to explore and upskill themselves, “If someone’s ambitious and wants to learn more, they can visit the public Reach library and find valuable courses,” says Hogan.
Ultimately, Intermountain Health uses Articulate 360 to help achieve its core mission. As Hogan puts it, “While course developers aren’t directly involved in patient care, Articulate enables us to contribute by teaching caregivers proper documentation. This allows caregivers to concentrate on what truly matters: impacting patient outcomes, which is what we’re all about at Intermountain Health.”
