Articulate Storyline makes it easy to deploy your content to learners with mobile devices. Here are answers to some common questions about publishing mobile content.
How Do I Publish for HTML5 and/or the Articulate Mobile Player App?
When you publish for Web or LMS, you'll see options for HTML5 and the Articulate Mobile Player.
- If learners will be using mobile devices that support Flash, they'll see the default Flash version of your course, regardless of the mobile publishing options you select.
- If learners will be using mobile devices that don't support Flash or the Articulate Mobile Player app, mark the box to Include HTML5 output.
- If learners will be using iPads or Android tablets, mark the box to Use Articulate Mobile Player for iOS or Android for the best viewing experience. (Anyone can download the free Articulate Mobile Player app from the iTunes App Store or the Android Market.)
- If learners will be using the Articulate Mobile Player app and you want to let them view content without an Internet connection, mark the box to Allow downloading for offline viewing.
Do HTML5 and Articulate Mobile Player Courses Look and Behave Like Flash Courses?
Most features behave the same way in Flash, HTML5, and the Articulate Mobile Player app, but some don't. See this article to find out how mobile deployment may impact your course.
How Do Learners View Courses on Mobile Devices?
After publishing, upload your course to a web server or LMS, then give learners a link to the story.html file (which is the file that launches the course). They’ll automatically see the right format for the device and browser they’re using. See this article for details on how this happens.
Do Learners Need an Internet Connection to View Courses in the Articulate Mobile Player?
Initially, yes. However, if you marked the option to let learners download the course for offline viewing, they only need to be connected to the Internet long enough to download it. Thereafter, they may view the course with or without an Internet connection. See this tutorial for details.
If you need to track learners' progress in an LMS, they must be connected to the Internet. Otherwise, the course won’t be able to communicate data to your LMS.
How Do You Remove a Course from the Articulate Mobile Player App?
Long-press any item in your library until an X icon appears in the upper left corner of each course thumbnail, then tap the X icon for each item you want to delete. When you're finished, tap anywhere on the screen to hide the X icons.
Can Courses Be Viewed on iPhones?
Yes. Include HTML5 output when publishing so learners can use mobile Safari on their iPhones to view the course.
Can Courses Be Viewed on Android Devices?
Yes. Include HTML5 output or Articulate Mobile Player output when you publish. When you direct learners to the story.html file in your published output, they'll automatically see the best version for their device and browser. See this article for details on how this works.
How Do I Track Learners' Progress When They View Content on Mobile Devices?
To track learners who view your course on mobile devices, do any of the following, depending on your LMS:
- If your LMS supports Tin Can API, mark the box to Use Articulate Mobile Player for iOS or Android for the best experience.
- If your LMS doesn't support Tin Can API, mark the box to Include HTML5 output.
- If learners will be using mobile devices other than iPad, mark the box to Include HTML5 output.

If I'm Using an LMS but Don't Need to Track Progress, Can I Use the Articulate Mobile Player?
It depends. If your LMS doesn’t require learners to log in to view content, they might be able to use the Articulate Mobile Player app. If your LMS requires learners to log in, they may not be able to use the Articulate Mobile Player, because browsers cannot pass security credentials to iPad apps unless the LMS supports Tin Can API. You'll need to test your published output in your LMS environment if you plan to allow viewing in Articulate Mobile Player.
