SMART Aware add-in for PowerPoint prevents Presenter '09 from activating

If you are using SMART's Aware add-in for PowerPoint, you may find that you are never prompted to activate Presenter '09, and the communication between Presenter and Quizmaker / Engage may not function properly.

To activate and use Presenter, you will need to disable the Aware add-in.  (You can re-enable the Aware add-in when Presenter is not in use.)  Here's how to disable the Aware add-in:

PowerPoint 2010

  1. In PowerPoint, go to the File tab, and select Options.
  2. Select the Add-Ins tab on the left side of the window.
  3. Use the Manage drop-down list at the bottom of the window to select COM Add-ins, and click the Go button.
  4. Deselect the check box for Aware MS Office Add-in.
  5. Click the OK button.
  6. Close PowerPoint for the change to take effect.
  7. Open PowerPoint again, and activate Presenter when prompted.

PowerPoint 2007

  1. In PowerPoint, go to the round Microsoft Office button in the upper-left corner, and select PowerPoint Options.
  2. Select the Add-Ins tab on the left side of the window.
  3. Use the Manage drop-down list at the bottom of the window to select COM Add-ins, and click the Go button.
  4. Deselect the check box for Aware MS Office Add-in.
  5. Click the OK button.
  6. Close PowerPoint for the change to take effect.
  7. Open PowerPoint again, and activate Presenter when prompted.

PowerPoint 2000 / 2003

Note:  The following must be done with administrative privileges.

DllUnregisterServer in AwareMSOfficeAddin.dll succeeded

  1. Close all Microsoft Office programs, including PowerPoint.
  2. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
  3. Type the following line of text into the Command Prompt window, depending on whether you are using a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system, and press the Enter key:
    • 32-bit Windows:
      regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files\SMART Technologies\SMART Product Drivers\AwareMSOfficeAddin.dll”
    • 64-bit Windows:
      regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files (x86)\SMART Technologies\SMART Product Drivers\AwareMSOfficeAddin.dll”
  4. You should receive the following message:
  5. Acknowledge the message, and close the Command Prompt window.
  6. Then open PowerPoint, and activate Presenter when prompted.
