Triggers make things happen. They’re the building blocks of interactions in Storyline 360. And now, working with triggers is faster than ever and more intuitive with the new triggers panel and workflow.

Watch the following demo by Tom Kuhlmann, Articulate’s Chief Learning Architect, then check out the details below.

What’s New in the Triggers Panel

Added January 21, 2020

Multi-Select Triggers

Select multiple triggers and edit them all at once. Easily copy, paste, move, disable, and delete triggers in bulk.

Paste Conditions Across Triggers

Save time by copying conditions from one trigger and pasting them on another. It's easy! Copy the trigger that has the conditions you want to reuse. Then right-click one or more triggers and use the context menu to paste conditions.

Visual Makeover

We redesigned the triggers panel with a fresh, modern look. We also added color-coding so it’s easier to scan and find what you’re looking for.

Inline Editing

Quickly edit everything in the triggers panel using convenient drop-down lists and text-entry fields. You don’t have to open the trigger wizard unless you want to.

Grouped View

Mark the Group box at the top of the triggers panel to group your triggers together by event so they’re easier to find, edit, and debug.

For example, let’s say you have several actions that occur when the learner clicks a button. You decide, instead, that you want all the actions to happen when the value of a variable changes. When your triggers are grouped, you only need to make a single edit to change the event that triggers all the actions.

Disable Individual Triggers

Temporarily disable individual triggers to troubleshoot interactions and try out different options. Just hover over a trigger and click the lightning bolt icon that appears. Click the icon again to re-enable the trigger. The option to disable triggers means you no longer have to delete and recreate them, and that’s a huge time-saver!

Collapse and Expand Triggers

Easily collapse and expand triggers for individual objects or entire sections of the triggers panel so you can focus on specific triggers. This is really helpful when you’re working with lots of triggers.

What’s New in the Trigger Wizard

Added November 29, 2022

Conditional Trigger Enhancements

Quickly create conditional triggers with alternative actions. Instead of needing multiple triggers, define two actions for a single trigger and use conditions to determine which action executes.

Added August 23, 2022

Print Slide Trigger

Let learners print individual slides, such as certificates, with a single trigger—no coding required.

Added July 19, 2022

Toggle Hidden or Disabled State Trigger

Use one trigger to quickly toggle between an object's current state and its hidden or disabled state. For example, easily create buttons that show/hide additional info or hints.

Added November 30, 2021

Custom xAPI Statements

Create advanced reporting options. Use triggers to define custom xAPI statements, such as "Maria interacted with Office Tour 360° Image."

Added March 24, 2020

Jump-to-Time Trigger

Create unique interactions and give learners new ways to navigate by using triggers that jump to different times or cue points on the timeline. For example, you might give learners a list of topics covered in a video, and then use jump-to-time triggers to go directly to the point where each topic begins.

Reorder Trigger Conditions

Easily change the order of conditions in the new trigger wizard without deleting and recreating them. Simply drag them up and down the list.

Visual Makeover

We reorganized the trigger wizard into three easy-to-use sections. Just choose 1) the action that occurs, 2) when it takes place, and 3) optional conditions.

Intuitive Language

The wizard now uses the same intuitive language as the triggers panel so it’s consistent and understandable.

Keyboard Navigation

Create and edit triggers quickly using your keyboard. Tab through the wizard and use your arrow keys to make selections in drop-down lists. You can even filter lists by typing the option you’re looking for.

Intelligent Prefills

The wizard remembers the last trigger you created and uses it as the starting point for your next trigger, helping you work faster, especially when you need to create several triggers with similar settings.

And the wizard prefills fields with the most common or logical choices to save you time. For example, if you select a dial on your slide and then create a trigger, the wizard assumes that you want the trigger to occur when the dial turns and selects that option for you. Of course, you can always change it.

Organized Variables

The wizard separates your custom variables from Storyline’s built-in variables, such as slide numbers, so they’re easier to find.

Streamlined Conditions

Adding conditions to your triggers is so much easier. Rather than opening separate windows, just use a drop-down list in the trigger wizard to add each condition. You can even type the name of the variable or object that you’re looking for, and the drop-down list filters as you type. The trigger wizard expands as you add conditions so you always have plenty of room to see all of your conditions without messy scroll bars.

Quickly edit each segment of a condition by clicking it and choosing an option from the drop-down list or entering a value in the text-entry field.

Easily switch between AND and OR conditions to try out different scenarios.

And save time by duplicating conditions. Hover over a condition and click the Duplicate Condition button that appears. Then use the inline editing options to tweak the new condition.

Compatibility With Other Versions of Storyline

The new trigger workflow is fully compatible with the classic workflow in all builds of Storyline 360 and Storyline 3, so you can share a project file with other authors no matter which version of Storyline they’re using.

Note: When you disable a trigger in the new workflow, that trigger is present but hidden in the classic workflow in Storyline 360 and Storyline 3.
